The Ryder Cup
-a brief history-
The event started way back in 1927 at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts and was dominated in the early days by the American team. The trophy was donated by Englishman, Samuel Ryder and originally, the event was contested by the American and English teams. This early domination continued all the way up to 1979 when the continental European players joined the fray to become the European Ryder Cup team. It is from thsi point that Europe started to take a hold on the competition for a number of reasons. Obviously, the strength in depth of the team increased as we had a bigger pool of players to pick from but something else has emerged that has brought unparralled success to the team.
Tony Jacklin captained the team from 1985 to 1989, winning two matches including an historic victory in the USA at Muirfield Village and a tie in 1989 at the Belfry. Then Bernhard Gallagher took over and captained for three matches, winning the last match on American soil at Oak Hill Country Club, (our own Philip Walton securing the winning point!). Then the magic formula appeared as we rotated the captaincy to include vice captains that would then assume the captaincy at some stage in the future. This has worked a treat with a very obvious team bond being created which the American team seem to lack.
The score since 1985 is Europe 11.5 - USA 5.5 and the overall score since it was created is 26 points to the USA and 14 points to Europe (11.5 of the Euopean points have been gained since 1979). The most appearances for the bi-annual match is Phil Mickelson with 12 events. Most points gained by any player is a European with 25.5 points, Sergio Garcia. Padraig has played 6 times and been on four winning teams. His record reads played 25 matches - won 10.5 points.
